Research has found that cooking with children can actually inspire them to eat foods that they would normally turn away from. If you have been searching the Internet lately for food related activities for kids, you might have been surprised to find that cooking with kids has made a huge comeback. More food websites like Kraft Foods, Better Homes and Garden, and Martha Stewart are offering easy to use, kid friendly cooking techniques and recipes.
The American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association have recommendations for parents with overweight children. They found that cooking at home with children actually had several long-term benefits.
1. Cooking at home reduced the amount of meals eaten outside the home, namely fast foods, and high fat foods.
2. Parents get to spend more quality time with their children because the meal times become more structured when you cook together.
3. The children learned more about healthy eating because they are involved with meal planning, recipes, shopping and food preparation.
4. Kids who learn how to cook at a younger age are more likely to eat healthier foods as they become adults.
Mothers and Grandmothers sharing recipe secrets has been a favorite pass time for generations. But in today's busy world we rarely have time to teach our children even basic cooking skills. However, there are ways we can start to teach our kids about cooking.
1. Pick a meal time that is less hectic. You may find you have more time in the evening or on weekends.
2. Make sure that tasks you want to do with your child are compatible with their age group. Children under five years old can wash vegetables, measure and pour ingredients. Children five and up can stir and mix, crack eggs, scrub, clean, and peel using plastic utensils.
3. Arrange your food preparation area so that it is easy for you and your child.
4. Start off with simple recipes like snacks, fresh vegetables, fruit salads, and sandwiches.
Once you have established a cooking activity routine, designate a kid- friendly space in your kitchen. A cabinet and drawer where your kids can store their own food utensils, cookware and recipe books will help them stay involved in cooking activities. Many online food networks offer cooking utensil, aprons, and baking kits that are suitable for children.
Most of all enjoy the time you are spending with your child. Not only will you find that you are communicating with them more, but that you are helping them make healthier food choices.
